J.Lo hires Murphy's ex as manager |
Superstar Jennifer Lopez has reportedly hired Brittany Murphy's former fiance Jeff Kwatinetz as her manager.
Kwatinetz's agency The Firm manages a host of A-list stars, including Adrien Brody, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mandy Moore, Martin Scorcese, Natalie Portman, Orlando Bloom, Robert de Niro, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Snoop Dogg.
According to gossip site PageSix.com, Lopez has plumped for Kwatinetz to take over duties from temporary manager Simon Fields, who will revert back to his original position as production partner.
Kwatinetz is expected to focus on boosting sales of J.Lo's latest album Rebirth following poor reviews and figures.
Murphy and Kwatinetz ended their four-month engagement last May.

PETA Targets Jennifer Lopez Film Premiere |
LOS ANGELES - Dozens of protesters representing People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals greeted Jennifer Lopez at the premiere of her new movie "Monster-in-Law with signs declaring her the "monster-in-fur" for her Sweetface fashion collection.
The protesters, who included some people dressed in animal suits, complained that they have asked several times that Lopez eliminate fur from her clothing line, but have been ignored.
"She could make a difference in a positive manner, and what she does is cause the death of a lot of animals," protester Linda Kraemer said during Friday's demonstration in front of the National Theater in Westwood.
Lopez was asked what she thought of the protesters.
"I don't," she replied as she headed into the premiere.
Others involved in the film said the demonstration didn't bother them.
"It's America. You have a right to protest and do whatever you want to do," said actress Wanda Sykes.

Congratulations to Power 106FM winner Sandra Ruiz, who recently won the Jennifer look-alike contest and was able to meet Jennifer Lopez! (And don't we all envy that!) She has provided JLo.net with an account of the day's events plus some photos! Much thanks Sandy!

Hi! My name is Sandy Ruiz and I was the lucky winner of the JLo look alike contest!!!!
Friday like around noon I got a call from a Power 106 rep saying that I had won the JLo look a like contest. I was like in complete awe...I couldn't believe it. I was jumping like crazy full of excitement
So when I got out from work I went to Build a Bear in downtown Disney and made this cute pretty bear for her. Then I started working on a fan book that I had started like a month ago so I was going crazy trying to finish the book I worked day and night on this book. Okay so then I was going crazy in trying to find cute shoes to wear for the event I went to like every mall here in Southern CaLi I couldn't find anything cute to match the shirt that I planned to wear. Thank god when I to Macys they have JLo shoe collection and bought some really cute bronze open shoe pricey shoe but at that moment I was up for whatever.
Monday morning came I got up at 5:45 in the morning to get ready. I was so excited I couldn't believe that I was meeting Mrs. Anthony
I and my sis Erika left our house at 9 a.m. we at club Ibieza like around 10 in the morning. There people already lined up.
We didn't get inside the club till like 12p.m. there were more then 300 people in the club. I was amazed. We didn’t get to sit down till like 1 the after noon. I went on stage with big boy, Liz, Fuzzy, Joe Grande and they looked at the fan book I made for Jennifer they were amazed they called me true fan. They asked me questions like how I started liking her and what kind of things I like about her etc. It was cool being on stage I would have loved it even more if I could have actually been there when Jennifer was on stage with them.
I got the opportunity to get a hug and a autograph from her. When I went to meet her one of her reps told her that I had won the look like contest she said congratulations and smiled!
I was kind of upset for the whole fact that the venue was so small and there were more then 300 people there. The place was not that good looking to have Jennifer there.. I kind of felt her to be uncomfortable the whole event to be honest with you it sucked big time. It was very disorganized way too many people. Security didn't allow us to take any pictures. I'm still sad cause I didn't get my pic with her taken. I took a lot of time to work on the fan book and bear everything and to not be acknowledge by the radio station to take me up there on stage to say Hi to her for at least 2 seconds really got me sad :(
Jennifer Looked gorgeous like always she was wearing a Rolling Stone shirt w/ jeans rolled up and red high heels and her big sunglasses.
So yea guys that was my experience with Jenny-Lo I have pictures of that day I don't were I could post them so guys can see them!
-Sandy Ruiz
A.K.A JLo's truest fan

Me and Mia this little girl asked to take a picture with me I was so honored I asked her if I could take one with her as well!

LOPEZ BLAMES FAMILY PLANS FOR MARRIAGE DISASTERS
Jennifer Lopez's insatiable quest for a family like her own caused her two previous marriages to collapse.
The superstar admits her failed marriages are entirely down to her own misjudgement and failure to spend more time out of wedlock with her men before exchanging martial vows with them.
But Lopez - who has been married to waiter OJANI NOA and dancer CRIS JUDD, and engaged to BEN AFFLECK - is confident third husband MARC ANTHONY will be her final one, despite rushing into that union too.
She says, "Mine isn't the greatest track record. But I had such a loving, caring family and I was trying to get that for myself. I never quite got there - until now.
"I'm a born romantic who thinks along the lines of love and marriage. The only mistake I made was getting married too quickly to the men I fell in love with. Everyone's had a good laugh at my expense. I didn't like it at the time and I don't think about it now.
"I just have to be thankful for the fact I'm now married to Marc and I can move on."
---------------------------------------
LOPEZ SHUNS MOTHER'S LOVE ADVICE
Jennifer Lopez regrets not taking onboard her mother's relationship advice, because it would have saved her from two failed marriages.
Lopez's mum GUADALUPE urged her daughter to allow her friendships with men time to blossom before settling into romance - wise words the JENNY FROM THE BLOCK beauty chose to ignore.
However, Lopez - currently married to third husband MARC ANTHONY - confesses her mother's life lesson disappeared from memory when Hollywood started corrupting her mind.
She recalls, "She said, 'Be friends first and then you can see whether you want to spend the rest of your life together.' But how many girls listen to everything their mother says?
"I should've taken more notice, but I lost my way a little. This business takes over and you don't think straight."
----------------------------------------------
LOPEZ DISMISSES DIVA IMAGE BY CITING MOTHERS' LOVE
JENNIFER LOPEZ has slammed her reputation for being a diva as preposterous - especially considering how much the mothers of her ex-husbands and boyfriends liked her.
J.Lo is currently married to her third husband MARC ANTHONY, following two failed marriages and public relationships with SEAN 'P DIDDY' COMBS and ex-fiance BEN AFFLECK, but she continues to impress her ex lovers' mums.
She says, "I have this reputation for being difficult and that can frighten people.
"But anyone will tell you that I'm not this pushy, confident woman in my private life. I'm quite shy.
"Whatever's happened in my love life, I've always got on well with my partners' moms. They've treated me well and I've liked them all.
"It didn't take them long to realise that I treat families with the greatest respect and politeness."

JENNIFER LOPEZ: Style star of the week |
Stylists watch as her fashion line, new album and movies inspire America
The most notable style star of the week is Jennifer Lynn Lopez. She has graced the red carpet with style, elegance and charisma over the past 10 years. She always makes it her duty to challenge contemporary outfits in the industry.
Born in the Castle Hill section of South Bronx, N.Y. on July 24, 1970, she always had an eye for fashion and entertainment. Growing up in a Hispanic community and being of Puerto Rican descent, Lopez had to find her way through life by trial and error.
Her biggest, if not greatest influences came from Rita Moreno in the musical “West Side Story.” At a young age Lopez already had her foot in the entertainment industry. She took dancing and singing lessons at the age of five. In Lopez’s youth she attended a prestigious Catholic school in which she was actively involved in sports such as track and field and tennis. Then, at the age of 18 Lopez moved out of her parent’s home and began working on a career that would lead her to places she had never even imagined. Lopez was working in a law firm while working two dancing jobs to help her through rough times.
Her biggest break came when she landed the role of a ‘fly girl’ on “In Living Color.” Through her praised dancing in the comedy “In Living Color,” Lopez moved to greater heights by dancing in R&B singer and dancer, Janet Jackson’s videos. With her eye-catching dance moves it was only a matter of time before she was introduced to the world of glamour, glitz and fashion.
Lopez’s first major film was Gregory Nava’s “My Family” (1995) and from then on her career as an actress was steadily on the rise. Two years later Lopez’s role of slain singer Selena Quintanilla Perez in “Selena” (1997) made people realize that she was here to stay. Later, gracing red carpets everywhere, this diva was spotted at all the nightclubs, bars, movie premieres and music awards shows letting it be known to everyone that her presence was and still is a necessity.
From then on Lopez appeared in many award nominated movies such as “Out of Sight,” “Enough,” “The Wedding Planner,” “Maid in Manhattan” and her newest flick “Monster-In-Law.” Along with playing main characters she also took a dive in the music industry. Lopez made chart topping hits with many artists and prestigious producers like Ja- Rule, Fat Joe, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and rapper Jada Kiss.
As her career went full throttle Lopez opened her own restaurant, launched a clothing line and a perfume, which has dominated the markets in the past year. With all this in place Lopez not only took fashion to a new level in 2005, but she defined her style in her newest and trendiest clothing line, Sweet Face. What has made Lopez so unique is her poise, desire and passion in everything that she lays her hands on. She has given back to the Hispanic community and continues to reach out and conquer new heights. By utilizing her glamorous red carpet appearances Lopez deserves all that she is credited for and her style will live on.

Angry crowd plans to jeer Lopez on Friday |
On April 29, Jennifer Lopez is expected to take part in the popular Jay Leno's talk show. Outside the studios where the programme is recorded, a crowd of animal rights campaigners are expected to assemble to show their disapproval to her controversial taste for wearing real fur. The activists have prepared a 10 metre inflatable beaver with a banner saying, 'Fur - Leave it to Beaver'.
Lopez's next film is the romantic comedy "Monster-In-Law" which will debut worldwide on May 13. Posters of the film have been altered to read "Monster-In-Fur". The Atlanta premiere scheduled for May 5 is another likely target for a similar showdown with Jennifer Lopez.

Banderas in 'Bordertown' with Lopez |
Antonia Banderas is set to join Jennifer Lopez in the indie thriller "Bordertown," pairing the two stars for the first time on the big screen.
Set on the U.S.-Mexico border, the film centers on a journalist who investigates a series of murders that take place in the vicinity of U.S.-owned factories in the region.
Gregory Nava, who directed Lopez in the 1997 biopic "Selena," is directing the picture, which is being fully financed by Mobius Entertainment. In 2001, Nava and Banderas signed up to work together on the Walt Disney Co. film "Zapata."
"Bordertown," which previously was set up at New Line Cinema, is due to shoot in New Mexico and Mexico.
Banderas most recently starred in "Imagining Argentina," and in "Shrek 2" he voiced Puss in Boots. He'll reprise the swashbuckling feline character in an animated adventure starring the cat, as well as in "Shrek 3."
Also among the actor's upcoming films is "The Legend of Zorro" -- the sequel to 1998's "The Mask of Zorro," in which he starred with Catherine Zeta-Jones. His other credits include the "Spy Kids" films and "Original Sin." In his native Spain he appeared in numerous features, including Pedro Almodovar's "Law of Desire" and "Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!"

Fans eat up Lopez's stop at Ibiza |
World-famous performer Jennifer Lopez came to Uptown Whittier on Monday.
After darting virtually unseen through a side entrance to Ibiza Steak and Lounge on Greenleaf Avenue, Lopez, clad in tight jeans and a red sweater, spent several hours with 300 die-hard fans who were invited to a backstage breakfast hosted by radio station Power 106 FM and Lopez's record label. Power 106 personality Big Boy also was there.
Fans like Bianca Gutierrez, who said she planned to ask Jennifer Lopez to marry her, and Tania Quinones, who brought along her modeling portfolio to show to the actress/singer/fashion designer.
"I've been a fan since fifth-grade, so I called the radio station and talked to Fuzzy and got on,' said Quinones, 19, of Corona. "I think he liked the idea that JLo and I are both from Puerto Rico.'
"I basically harassed the station until I got on,' added Maha Salama, 21, of La Mirada, who came with Gutierrez and Quinones. "I wanted to see her because she's real.'
While fans, who won spelling bees and look-alike-contests in recent weeks to get invited to the breakfast, got in easily, the press and local residents were kept outside by a huge security force.
An employee from Power 106 said Lopez did not want her picture taken, and the security personnel from Ibiza and the radio station swarmed in front of Ibiza's entrances to keep people at bay.
Those outside got only a brief glimpse of the superstar. That was a little after 3 p.m., when she walked into the alley next to the club, perched on the side of a black Lincoln Navigator and waved to the crowd.
"Selena, Selena, we loved you in Selena,' came shouts in unison, as the vehicle sped away down the alley.
The event was such a success, said Ibiza owner Ralph Verdugo, that he hopes to host Britney Spears or maybe Beyonce at the club in the future.
"We hope to continue pumping up the reputation of the club,' he said.

Lost Planet's Paul Martinez Cuts New Jennifer Lopez Video Featuring Fat Joe |
Thanks to xox for this news submission!
Editor Paul Martinez of Lost Planet recently contributed his talent to the new music video, “Hold You Down,” for Jennifer Lopez with fellow Bronx native Fat Joe. The R&B ballad, which is a testament to hometown love, features the duo in various neighborhood settings as they sing about love, staying real, and loyalty.
The video opens with a cityscape scene of the Bronx, complete with New York subway and graffiti-ed walls. Fat Joe leans against the side of a brick structure covered with graffiti while Jennifer Lopez ambles along the top of a building. The two sing about being there for each other, even in the beginning of their careers when no one else believed in them. The clip includes familiar sights from the Bronx from the streets to local storefronts to apartments with religious paraphernilia to a group of young Catholic schoolgirls dressed in uniforms -- as Lopez and Fat Joe continue to profess their appreciation for their hometown roots.
Lost Planet Editor Paul Martinez says that despite its seamless appearance, the video was quite difficult to edit. One major challenge was the short turnaround time of two days. Another was highlighting the dynamic between the two artists, as well as incorporating the images of the city in a musical style.
"It was actually a complex project because of the integration of the Bronx footage," explains Martinez. "The interaction between Jennifer Lopez and Fat Joe, and even footage of the kids on the streets, had to be cut into the song in a meaningful and subtle way. At the same time, the vibe couldn’t be too sweet since it was providing insight into Jennifer’s upbringing and culture. We found a good place for the integration of the footage without overdoing it. The passing moments of graffiti, buildings she lived in, subways and even religious icons all serve as indirect references to her childhood."
Jennifer Lopez was very hands-on in the editing process providing comments that helped to develop the story in a personal way. In addition, the presence of Fat Joe adds another dimension to the video, as Lopez and the rapper are Bronx natives and friends in real life.
"The director, Diane Martel, and DP Malik Sayeed captured some amazing moments of the Bronx -- moments that Jennifer would have seen growing up in the neighborhood," concludes Martinez. "All of the shots help to set up the feeling for the song and doesn¹t make it the typical R&B ballad. The smooth collaboration and great narrative made this a fun project to work on."

Lopez Considers Writing Celebrity Help Book |
Jennifer Lopez is considering penning a self-help book for celebrities to help them deal with the paparazzi.
The lovely Latina feels she's the perfect person to write such a guide because she has been the target of media scrutiny and paparazzi stake-outs for years.
She tells website MOVIEHOLE.NET, "Nobody likes to hear somebody in the public eye who they feel makes a lot of money, complain, so we don't, but it is a very strange thing.
"Nobody writes books about how to deal with that, so maybe I'll do that next."
Lopez admits the situation became so bad after her marriage to MARC ANTHONY last year (04) she was forced to become a prisoner in her own home.
She explains, "Eventually they figure out where you live, so I actually did pull back a little bit where you stopped seeing me everywhere all the time and I just stopped leaving my house, and that's the crazy part of it."

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lopez have topped a poll to find the "best butts in Hollywood".

It was a tight affair to find the best female butt. J-lo just pipped Destiny Child's Beyonce. Angelina Jolie came third.

Pam Blasts JLO |
Anderson: Wear fur to look fat and smell gross
Pamela Anderson says people like Jennifer Lopez who wear fur smell like a wet dog and look “fat and gross“.
Anderson, who has become something of an animal rights activist in recent years, blasted J-Lo for continuing to wear fur, despite the screams of furry animal fans.
“People who wear fur smell like a wet dog and they look fat and gross,” she told Jane magazine.
“They look really immature and unenlightened. Every season the furriers put propaganda everywhere that fur is taking off again and they give free coats to idiots like Jennifer Lopez and Puff Daddy.”

Manson Regrets Her J.Lo 'Punch' Comments |
GARBAGE frontwoman SHIRLEY MANSON has apologized to JENNIFER LOPEZ after famously claiming she wanted to punch the Latina beauty.
The redhead singer hit the headlines in 2002 when she fired into J.Lo's alleged diva behaviour. Manson agreed that Lopez was good-looking, but "wanted to punch her nonetheless".
During a recent appearance on MTV UK's TOTAL REQUEST LIVE show in London, Manson admitted she had met Lopez on a magazine shoot and was embarrassed over her fiery outburst.
Manson says, "I said that a while ago and subsequently met her during a photo shoot and she was really cool and gracious about it.
"It was a shoot for VANITY FAIR that I did with her, GWEN STEFANI, EVE and loads of others.
"I felt like a right piece of work for saying that when I saw her there, she was cool though. I've changed my mind about her now."

Fonda's Slapping Lessons From Lopez |
Jane Fonda took slapping lessons from her MONSTER IN LAW co-star JENNIFER LOPEZ after striking her several times in rehearsals.
Fonda and Lopez play warring females in the movie and have one scene where they literally just slap each other.
And Fonda admits she had to take advice from Lopez after constantly missing her mark and connecting with J.LO's head.
Fonda says, "Jennifer, who is a dancer, is very adept at physicality. A couple of times in rehearsals I almost hurt her, so she directed me and it was too cool.
"She told me what to do and where I can throw my arm or throw my body so that it would look good but it wouldn't really hurt her. Doing these kinds of things with her was really easy and a lot of fun."

MSN thinks Jennifer Lopez should be "Wonder Woman" |
MSN Movies' Hollywood Hitlist on casting the role for the new Wonder Woman film:
For a truly inspired choice, I would consider (don't laugh) Jennifer Lopez. I know what you're thinking: "J-Lo? Did you see 'Gigli' and 'Jersey Girl'? Are you crazy?" Yes, everyone knows she has had some tough times recently, but her career is rebounding. And though she hasn't shown it lately, the girl can act when she wants too (remember "Out of Sight"?). She has the star power, the beauty and the booty for the role.
They've also got a poll up where you can vote for who you'd like to see get the role. Angelina Jolie is currently winning, with Jessica Alba and Jennifer neck-and-neck for second place.

Two News Items From Hollywood.com |
Lopez Simplifies Her Life
Jennifer Lopez is so intent on living a more simple life, she's selling her collection of cars and trading in her lavish properties for smaller homes.
While fans believed that Lopez had recently traded in her Los Angeles and Miami properties for less grand homes to erase memories of her failed engagement to Gigli co-star Ben Affleck, superstar J.Lo insists it's because she's developed a new appreciation for a more simple life.
Lopez, married to singer Marc Anthony, says, "I came from virtually nothing, so there was a time when I was like, 'Oh my God, I can have that car or I can have that coat.'
"I don't think anybody in my position wouldn't have done the same thing. But you get to a point where you want to strip down.
"Not that I won't have a nice bag, but I'm going to sell that big museum-type house and get a nice cozy house, and I'm going to have one car and trade the others in. I want to go back to something simpler."
Lopez Gets Political with Fonda as Adviser
Jennifer Lopez is considering a move into politics and she's planning to use activist pal Jane Fonda as an adviser when she gets serious.
The singer/actress admits she has never got involved with political and social issues because she didn't think her opinions mattered, but, after working with Fonda--who was once dubbed Hanoi Jane for her outspoken opposition to the war in Vietnam--she reveals she's more interested in following a cause.
Lopez says, "She's been politically involved her whole life but I never have... As you get older and you become more mature you become more aware of the world around you.
"I remember asking Jane if I wanted to do something what would you say and she said, 'There's a time to do things and a way to do things. When you're ready call me and I'll tell you what's right and what's wrong, so you won't get yourself in any trouble.' She was cool about that."
Fonda and Lopez became firm friends while shooting new movie comedy Monster in Law together last year.

Lopez still wants to be called J.Lo |
Jennifer Lopez has declared she still wants to be called J.Lo - several months after fans were led to believe she wanted to ditch the moniker.
While it had been reported that Lopez was keen to distance herself from the name, the Jenny From the Block singer, wife of salsa star Marc Anthony, insists she continues to enjoy being addressed in abbreviated form.
She says, "I still like to be called J.Lo. I was just saying that last night when (Marc and I) went out. We were running through this crowd, in a hurry, and a little girl asked: 'Could you sign this?' I signed J.Lo really fast, and I was like: 'That's when it comes in handy."

Video: Jennifer's Introduction to Selena Tribute Concert |
Opening to Selena ¡Vive! by Jennifer Lopez - WMV/1:22/2.88MB
NOTE: Both segments with Jennifer are included; we just combined them into one video to save space.
Here's the translation of Jennifer's introduction (thanks to Joseph):
Here, at the Houston Astrodome, 10 years ago we were witness to the last concert by Selena. These walls still keep the voice of her last goodbye, and you can still feel her presence, energy, magic and music. We will celebrate the star that made us feel, sing and dream so much. A star whose light will shine forever. Tonight, only a few steps from here we will go from the past to the present because Selena lives, and just like Selena lives in me, she lives in every one of you that love and admire. Let's celebrate that Selena lives.
I learned a lot from Selena, many beautiful things, to smile at life more often, to value human sacrifice. Not to give up, and to believe that true love really exists.

J.Lo's Album Marketing Goes $150,000 Over Budget |
From Contact Music
Jennifer Lopez's new album REBIRTH has hit further crisis, the marketing campaign has gone $150,000 (GBP80,000) over budget.
Rebirth is believed to have only sold a disappointing 400,000 copies in its first three weeks on release.
But attempts to raise the record's profile look doomed as cash has run out. An insider tells website PAGESIX.COM the marketing over-spend has also led to some of J.Lo's dancers walking out.
The source says, "They haven't been paid in like a month.
"You won't be hearing much more of the album after the budget crisis."

J. Lo Upset About Dangerous Close Call With Paparazzi |
Lopez Says Photographer Nearly Caused Car Crash
LOS ANGELES -- Jennifer Lopez said she knows no one wants to hear celebrities complain about how hard things are.
So she said she usually keeps pretty quiet about paparazzi. But she insists that they can be a real problem.
J. Lo gets goosepimples just thinking about what happened over the weekend.
She said her car almost got into an accident this past weekend with paparazzi. She said as her driver was "just taking a left right by the police station in Beverly Hills, all of a sudden this car goes screech" right in front of her.
Lopez said it was paparazzi trying to beat the light by making the same turn as her car. Until that moment, she said she didn't even realize she was being pursued. She said they almost wrecked because the photographer was following too closely in a speeding car.
Lopez said "sometimes they feel like it's a game -- like they're playing cops and robbers."
She said what's surprising is that they are so aggressive in their pursuit of that one photo.
She said she's thinking about writing a book about how to deal with fame and fortune -- but realizes that no one will probably buy it.

Jennifer Lopez now wants to be known as Jennifer Anthony.
She has decided the time is right to take her husband's name professionally.
Jennifer married Marc Anthony last summer reports The Sun.
A source said: "Marc never liked the whole J-Lo thing. He thought it wasn't very classy."

Jane Fonda on Jennifer Lopez |
Fonda is a small woman with a big, patrician voice and the flawless enunciation of a boarding-school and Vassar student. (She dropped out after two years.) She's focused and serious but also dryly funny, especially about working with Lopez.
"I normally would never wear velour or whatever this is called," Fonda says, pointing to the baby-blue sweatsuit she's wearing. Lopez "makes these things, and they're so comfortable. She's helped me get hip."

She says she prefers her waist and stomach, saying "I'm lucky genetically. I'm small there."

MILIAN NOT TO BLAME FOR J.LO INSULT |
Christina Millian fears a line in her new film BE COOL may have angered chart pal JENNIFER LOPEZ, thwarting any possible future collaborations.
Milian worked with Lopez in the earlier stages of her career and composed the Latina beauty's 2001 hit PLAY.
In an early scene of the film, in which Milian plays a wannabe singer called LINDA MOON, her producer claims J.Lo's albums are so overproduced that he "could be Jenny from the block".
Milian says, "It's not my fault they put that line in there."

J. Lo Sells Miami Home For Bargain Price Of $13.9 Million |
It seems Jennifer Lopez was in such a rush to leave Millionaires’ Row in Miami Beach that she sold her waterfront mansion for what some brokers call a bargain.
“Because of the size of the house and the big piece of land, it is a fantastic deal,” said broker Nelson Gonzalez, senior vice president of Esslinger-Wooten-Maxwell in Miami Beach.
While not involved in the $13.9 million transaction, he had shown the 11-bedroom estate to would-be buyers.
The restored 76-year-old home at 5800 N. Bay Road sits on the shore of Biscayne Bay and is two blocks west of La Gorce Country Club, which has one of South Florida’s top golf courses.
Nine months after she married salsa singer Marc Anthony, Lopez sold her part-time, 10,852-square-foot residence that she used as a refuge in September 2003, after she and actor Ben Affleck canceled their Santa Barbara, Calif., wedding.
A pack of paparazzi and reporters camped outside the gated estate, infuriating neighbors in the community south of La Gorce Island and north of the Julia Tuttle Causeway.
Sources familiar with the property said Lopez began spending less time in her Miami Beach mansion after marrying Anthony, her third husband.
The 1.21-acre estate’s new owners, Fisher Island residents Mark J. and Elyse S. Gainor, will likely attract much less attention than the singer-actress. They closed on the deal March 17. Public documents show the official seller was Gary Kress, business manager for Lopez since 2003.
Mark Gainor was traveling and could not be reached for comment. He is a health care entrepreneur and venture capitalist who invests primarily in diabetes-related businesses.
Lopez’s publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnick in New York, did not respond to an e-mail request for comment.
Lopez had been showing her home to potential buyers for about five months, Gonzalez said.
The home, with 200 feet on the water, could have sold for more had she placed it on the open market, said broker Carlos Justo, a principal with Sol LLC, a franchisee of Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates Inc.
“It should have sold for 30 percent more and up,” said Justo, who showed the mansion to New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez, who later purchased a property in Coral Gables.
“This home is special,” Justo said. “This is more of a Mizner, Palm Beach type of home. It is very unique for the Miami-Dade market.
“When you walk to it, it feels that you are entering the Vizcaya,” he added, referring to the opulent Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami.
In May 2002, the diva paid $9.5 million, or $875.40 per square foot, for the property.
Area brokers said the house was worth more than the $1,280 per square foot that she just got for it, especially when compared with a recent sale of a house at 92 La Gorce Circle on La Gorce Island. That remodeled 8,044-square-foot home built in 1939 on a 0.98-acre parcel sold last month for $11.54 million, or $1,434.61 per square foot, according to Miami-Dade County records.
“She gave it away,” said broker Fabian Garcia-Diaz, a senior associate with Fortune International in Miami Beach. “Whoever bought Lopez’s house got a good deal.”
The two-story Mediterranean-style villa, which once belonged to murdered powerboat magnate Don Aronow has 10 bathrooms, 11 fireplaces, a pool, gazebo and dock.
Gainor’s acquisition came with a bonus. His neighbors on each side are pop musicians Barry and Robin Gibb of Bee Gees fame.
Other celebrities who own homes on North Bay Road include Latin pop singer Chayanne, race car driver Eddie Irvine, Broadway producer and director Harold Prince, movie producer Keith Barish, Latin singer Shakira and clothing designer Calvin Klein.
Well-known entrepreneurs more of Gainor’s ilk with homes on the waterfront include hoteliers and art collectors Mera Rubell and her son, Jason, and restaurateur Sydney J. Feltenstein, owner of Long John Silver’s.
Pop singer Ricky Martin’s home at 5030 N. Bay Road is currently on the market for $10.9 million, area brokers said.
Eccentricity is also part of the fabric of North Bay Road. The street is home to one of South Florida’s few castles, an 11,638-square-foot property on the market for $7.5 million, said Garcia-Diaz.
The medieval-looking house belongs to Capt. Michael Burke, owner of Windjammer Barefoot Cruises. In 1999, Burke converted a 1923 Mizner home into a six-bedroom home with a drawbridge, four Mirador towers, gargoyles and statuary. Its grounds are surrounded by a shark-filled moat, Garcia-Diaz said.
