Lopez Tabloid Cover Queen Of 2004

Thursday, December 30th, 2004

If there were an Editors’ Choice Award, this year’s winner would be Jennifer Lopez.

The runner-up would be Jennifer Aniston – thanks in large measure to her marriage to Brad Pitt.

And second runner-up honors would go to the Olsen twins, mainly because of Mary-Kate’s reported eating disorder.

In a Daily News tally of the big four celebrity weeklies – People, the Star, Us Weekly and In Touch Weekly – Lopez was a dominant subject on a total of 29 covers in 2004. That’s nearly 14% of the issues published.

Aniston, alone or with Pitt, reigned on 26 covers, followed by the Olsens, with 23.

Rounding out the top five were Britney Spears, with 22, and Jessica Simpson, who racked up a total of 19 covers alone or with her husband, Nick Lachey. Rumors of a chill in the couple’s marriage sure helped.

In a carry-over from 2003, when Lopez’s rocky relationship with Ben Affleck was a feast for gossip, the mags tracked her every move (one breakup and one wedding) and speculated wildly.

In Touch, for instance, featured Lopez prominently on 15 covers, returning again and again to the pregnancy angle.

Two issues in early summer gushed over J.Lo’s supposed plans to start a family with new husband Marc Anthony.

By late July, showing J.Lo and Aniston, In Touch asked, “Who’s Really Pregnant?”

In September, the mag still wondered if J.Lo was expecting (“What’s the real story?”) before concluding in November that “Marc’s not ready for a child with J.Lo!,” then claiming this month she has “surprise baby plans.”

In striking contrast, “Jennifer & Ben: Inside the Split” (Feb. 9) and “Marc & Jennifer: Inside Their Marriage” (July 26) were the only J.Lo covers published by People, which goes for a wider mix of celeb and human-interest stories.

Like a supermodel who looks good in all kinds of clothes, Aniston fronted a wide variety of stories, including eight Us Weekly covers, such as “Hot Couples,” botox (“God knows I could use it”), makeovers, “Is Jen Pregnant?” and “Fashion Winners & Sinners.”

The Olsens, but more often Mary-Kate alone, were favorites of In Touch (11 covers) and the Star (seven). Meanwhile, the Star’s growing specialty was very candid camera.

The redesigned weekly had its biggest newsstand sale in the first half of 2004 with “Best & Worst Beach Bodies,” showing curvy Mariah Carey (best) and once-curvy Jerry Hall (worst).

It was such a hit that Star all but duplicated the cover a few weeks later. “Busts & Butts!” again featured shapely Carey opposite another fleshy backside in a white bikini, this one belonging to Britney Spears.

The Star’s embarrassment roundups also included “Scariest Makeovers!,” “Celebrity Flaws” (such as Spears’ “flubby tummy”), “Hollywood Hair Disasters!” and “Stars Without Makeup!”

Top 5 cover appearances 2004

1. Jennifer Lopez, 29
2. Jennifer Aniston (also with Brad Pitt), 26
3. Olsen Twins (especially Mary-Kate), 23
4. Britney Spears, 22
5. Jessica Simpson (also with Nick Lachey), 19

Jennifer Lopez’s Ex-Husband Sues Her

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2004

LOS ANGELES – An ex-husband of Jennifer Lopez sued her for alleged breach of contract, claiming he was wrongly fired as the manager of her restaurant in Pasadena.

Ojani Noa, a waiter who married Lopez in 1997, filed a lawsuit Tuesday in Superior Court. They met at a restaurant in Miami where he worked and were married for about a year.

Noa quit his job managing the Conga Room in Los Angeles in 2002 to take a job running Lopez’s new restaurant, Madres, and was told by her that she would not fire him “without good cause or reason,” the lawsuit said.

Noa, who was paid $1,000 a week, was fired six months after he started the job at Madres, which opened in April 2002, the lawsuit said. It wasn’t known why Noa was fired.

“Mr. Noa tried to call Ms. Lopez to find out what prompted this sudden change of events. His calls went unreturned,” the lawsuit said.

A phone call to Lopez’s publicist was not immediately returned.

Noa is seeking unspecified damages.

JLO by Jennifer Lopez to Distribute in Former Soviet Republics

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2004

From Sweetface Fashion Company :

NEW YORK, Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ — Sweetface Fashion Company, LLC announced today they have signed an agreement to distribute the JLO by Jennifer Lopez sportswear collection throughout Russia and the former Soviet republics with Toroil, S. A., an investment company based in Lugano, Switzerland.

The partnership between Toroil and Sweetface comes just months after the highly successful opening of the first-ever JLO boutique in Moscow. The response to the product at the boutique, located in the Crocus City Mall, prompted Sweetface to identify a distribution partner who could further capitalize on the market potential of Russia and the former Soviet republics. The agreement with Toroil contemplates both distribution in multi-brand stores as well as strategic openings of freestanding JLO stores in Kazakhstan, the Ukraine, Latvia and 11 other former republics (excluding Russia and Azerbaijan).

“The emergence of these dynamic markets provides enormous potential for Sweetface to achieve its strategic goal of making JLO a truly global brand,” said Chip Rosen, Vice President of Global Licensing and Marketing. “We are excited to be working with Toroil, whose expertise and understanding of this region will undoubtedly lead to successful expansion of our brand.”

International distribution of the clothing line fulfills a key aspect of the Sweetface strategy. In response to the phenomenal reaction to JLO products in Canada, Latin America and now Russia, Rosen said, “Continued expansion into the international market creates new chapters in the overall strategy for the brand, granting Jennifer’s collection a great opportunity to blossom throughout these regions. Hardly a day goes by without inquiries from international retailers, which is a testament to Jennifer’s global popularity.”

Toroil, S.A., is a Swiss Association which does business in both Western and Eastern Europe, as well as throughout the countries comprising the former Soviet Union. Toroil participates in a wide array of business ventures, from financing projects in the energy industry to marketing and promoting Western companies and products to consumers. Toroil is located in Lugano, Switzerland and in Moscow, Russia.

Giorgi Rtskhiladze, President of Toroil, remarked, “The Russian-speaking market expects no less than a star-quality fashion line when it carries the name ‘JLO by Jennifer Lopez,’ and we are excited to partner with Jennifer and Sweetface to introduce her brand to this market which we are certain will define the gold standard for casual, upscale fashion.”

Sweetface Fashion Company is a joint venture between Jennifer Lopez, Andy Hilfiger and Joe Lamastra. The company designs, markets, manufactures, and sells the JLO by Jennifer Lopez sportswear collection. The current licensed products for the JLO by Jennifer Lopez brand include swimwear, girl’s apparel, fragrance, jewelry, outerwear, lingerie, handbags, belts and small leather goods, hats, gloves and scarves, watches, sunglasses and footwear. The brand is currently distributed in the US, Canada, Latin America, and through its flagship store in Moscow.
